Castine ranks as one of Maine’s most lovely towns. A truculent frontier area in the days of our colonial forebears, it lives on today a quiet, manicured place, rife with fine old homes and pretty tree-lined streets. Castine is the kind of town to which you come to shoot a period film when you hope to capture a fine sense of unspoiled time and place. At the mouths of the Bagaduce and Penobscot Rivers, Castine has long been a seafaring town, and, not surprisingly, the campus of Maine Maritime Academy is here. There are no towns close by to the north, so Castine carries on a well-satisfied separateness, off by itself at the end of a peninsula, discretely hidden from open ocean by Islesboro and Cape Rosier.
