Maine Festival That Should Not Be Missed!

Our favorite is the Fourth of July in Castine when the whole town comes alive in an outdoor festival of activities.  There is music on the waterfront, a costume parade, and traditional games on the common, such as: potato sack races, a town tug of war, and fireworks over the harbor after sunset. There is nothing better than Maine festivals!

  • "Wings, Waves & Woods", the annual birding weekend, takes place in May 2016 on Deer Isle, Stonington and neighboring islands.
  • The Acadia Birding Festival is scheduled for June 2-5, 2016 and includes a Pelagic seabird boat trip, a wonderful birding opportunity.
  • Castine House and Garden Tour.  on July 13 visit 18 properties all located within the town village. Included are 11 beautiful private homes, the 1850 Samuel P. Grindle House, the 1763 John Perkins House, 4 gracious gardens, and Dyce Head Lighthouse.
  • Bastille Day takes place July 14th. Bastille Day is the name given in English-speaking countries to the French National Day, which is celebrated on 14 July each year.  In 2015, The Castine Historical Society hosted a replica of the French frigate Hermoine to a welcoming crowd of 5,000 spectators.
  • Castine Plein Air Festival , July 21-13 2016, brings together many great artists painting the landscapes and architectural uniqueness of Castine followed by an art exhibit and sale.
  • Castine Classic Yacht Race.  The Castine Yacht Club annually sponsors the Castine Classic Yacht Race from Castine to Camden in late July. This 19.6nm race will be the first of three day races in conjunction with the Camden Classic Yacht Race to Brookin and the Eggemoggin Reach Regatta. They are “fun” races of old, priceless, classic yachts, many of which do not regularly race competitively.
  • The Blue Hill Fair, over Labor Day Weekend, Sep 1-5, is an old Maine county fair with traditional farm games, oxen and horse pulls, 4-H ribbon-award ceremonies, pig races, barrel relays on horse, and sheep dog trials.
  • The annual Common Ground Fair  takes place September 23-25, 2016.  This fair is organized by the Maine Organic Farmers and Growers Association and features organic produce, hand made products, livestock and music.  It is located in Unity, Maine and draws people from all over the state and New England.
  • Pumpkin Festival in Castine takes place in October and is a, community-wide, daylong family celebration.  The festival starts out with a pancake breakfast and continues throughout the day and early evening with cooking contests, pumpkin carvings, a scavenger hunt, a “Beer Garten,” bake sale, pumpkin painting, craft vendors, fall arrangements, hikes and a spectacular lighted display of carved pumpkins by the 11th Hour Farming Artists.
