The elm trees of Castine contribute to the historic and unique qualities of this community.  The town currently has almost 350 majestic Dutch elms, a rare stand of trees left after most of these trees were lost in past decades to Dutch elm disease.  The Elm Tree Committee is responsible for maintaining the historic green canopy of Castine by providing for the care and maintenance of its elm trees and significant streetscape trees making Castine one of 19 Tree City USA towns in Maine which is part of the Arbor Day Foundation.   Maine Arbor Day Week takes place the third full week of May with Maine communities planting new trees.

The Elm Tree Benefit Dinner, hosted at the Pentagoet Inn is scheduled for June 24th 2014.  This annual event raises money for the preservation and replanting of Castine's elm trees with all proceeds being donated.  Book your table now for this very popular event.  207-326-8616
