‘ A very Victorian summer hotel with a
turret, gables, a wraparound porch, even awnings. Jack
Burke and Julie Van de Graaf have been restoring the
1894 building room by room. Guest rooms are unusually
shaped and nicely furnished; one room at Ten
Perkins Street (a neighboring 200-year-old home
that’s an annex) has a working fireplace. In all there
are 16 guest rooms, each with private bath. Common
space includes sitting rooms, the wicker-furnished and
floweiy veranda and back deck, the fine restaurant and the Passports Pub.
$95—205 includes a full breakfast.
Open for dinner in-season. Choose
to sit in the airy, candlelit dining room with its
well-spaced tables, on the porch, or in Passports Pub.
You might begin with a big bowl of Blue Hill mussels
with basil and lavender in white wine broth ($7.50),
and dine on slow-roasted lamb shank with sage risotto,
garlicky Swiss chard, and bitter orange compote.
Entrées $20—23. Don’t pass up dessert, the pride of
innkeeper Julie Van de Graaf, former owner of a
well-known Philadelphia pastry shop. Full bar.
