The Pentagöet
returns to the Farmers Market
Once again this year the Pentagöet
will be offering our granola and
baked goods at the Farmers Market in
Stonington.
The market takes place Friday
mornings from 10 to noon behind the former school
building in Stonington.
The Ellsworth American article below features the
farmers market
and describes a little of its history.
Smiles Abound at Stonington-Deer Isle
Farmers Market
(Excerpts from the Ellsworth American)
by James Straub
Stonington- The weekly Friday morning farmer's market
in Stonington offers a first-rate example of the
outdoor markets that are becoming a mainstay of the
summer celebrations in communities across the state.
Known as the Stonington-Deer Isle Farmers Market, the
weekly event is held each Friday from 10 a.m. to
noon behind the former school in Stonington.
By design, the open market provides fresh organic
produce, meat, seafood, live plants, fresh flowers,
an array of handcrafts, baked goods, homespun wool
and prepared food.
By coincidence, the market provides endless smiles.
Smiles, laughter and lively conversation flow freely
among the vendors, local residents and an
ever-changing roster of tourists.
No one could agree exactly when the farmers market
started in Deer Isle. It likely started about
eight years ago. All agreed that it started
small and grew steadily.
Nancy Hill said a few ladies with extra produce
started the market in Deer Isle.
Three years ago, concerns about crossing the road at
the Deer Isle site made it clear that market had
outgrown its location and the event was moved to
Stonington, Hill said.
"It's so much fun," she said. "I look forward to
it."
Some 30 vendors regularly attend the market in
Stonington, and most would agree with Hill.
[Another vendor noted] "What I love about this market
is that it just spontaneously comestogether.
This year there are more vendors than ever before.
I look forward to Fridays."
Regular customers over the years would agree that the
market has grown.
"I've never seen so many vendors in all my life," said
a woman from Sunset in Deer Isle who stopped to
catch up with one of the veteran vendors.
As he waited to be served one of the prepared dishes
at the market, Stonington Selectman Chris Betts
looked around and said, "The place is booming."
